Foster Stands Firm!

Current West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster has again turned down Fabio Capello's call to be included in his latest international squad.

Foster who declared to be an 'indefinite sabbatical' from international football last spring, was visited by Ray Clemence regarding making a return to the England fold to provide much needed support for Joe Hart. Foster instead opted to maintain his international stance, claiming that he needs to concentrate on his club form for WBA.

The former Birmingham and Manchester United stopper joins fellow Premiership goalkeeper Paul Robinson in distancing himself from international football, at a time when the England goalkeeping ranks are looking particularly bleak.

With Foster and Robinson out of contention, it leaves only Hart and Norwich City's John Ruddy as first choice English goalkeepers in the Premiership - who Capello has deemed unqualified to be included in his latest squad.

One can only wonder what will happen should Joe Hart suffer an injury.....

Keeper Focus: Kevin Pilkington

KeeperTalk's latest interview comes from a goalkeeper that has gone through all the emotions as a goalkeeper. Kevin Pilkington made the breakthrough at Manchester United in 1994 when he was handed is first team début.Unfortunately for Kevin first team opportunities were hard to come by, mainly due to being in competition with arguably the greatest goalkeeper of all time in Peter Schmeichel. This forced KP to move in to the football league where he has gone to play over 350 games and has recently just signed for Luton Town FC at the age of 37. KeeperTalk was given the opportunity to speak to Kevin and ask him about his career as a whole.

How did last season go for you Kevin?

I am always disappointed when I'm not playing regularly so it was a frustrating season for me. When I got a chance to play (Fa trophy and Mansfield loan) I really enjoyed it and thought I did myself justice.

What made you choose Luton as your next club?

I spent 3 months there on loan from Notts and really enjoyed my time and was made very welcome. Its a big club with good history so it was a fairly easy decision.

Did you ever consider playing abroad?

I would love to play abroad! I nearly went to New Zealand a couple of years ago but unfortunately it fell through. I think it would be a great experience not just for me but my family as well.

Having had injury problems, what is your approach to training now?

The same as it has always been train as hard as possible. Always give a 100%.

Has there been any individual who has been a huge inspiration to your career?

My Dad. He was always there for me when I needed help or advice. But in footballing Circles Eric Harrison. Hard task master but a legend!

Who is your favourite current goalkeeper?

There's a few. Joe hart I really like. Great ability and temperament. Buffon has done it at the top level for years. Reina the best distribution! Stekelenburg can't believe he only went for 6.3 million euros!

Who is the goalkeeper you most dislike?

None! Great respect for all keepers!

Who is your all-time favourite goalkeeper?

Peter Schmeichel! The best!

Playing/training with the great Peter Schmeichel day in day out at United, what was he like?

Awesome! Somedays he was unbeatable. Lucky enough to be on the bench when he made the save against rapid Vienna. Unbelievable save!

What gloves are you wearing at the moment?

I am wearing ReactGK gloves. Very good as well!

What has been the biggest obstacle to your career so far?

The Schmeichels! Peter and Kasper!

Greatest moment of your career to date?

Making my debut for United against Palace and promotion winning season with Mansfield!

That is your ambition for the rest of your career?

Play as much as possible and enjoy playing. Also I want to be a GK coach and give some of my knowledge to some young gks! I love goalkeeping and want to be involved for years to come!

KeeperTalk would like to thank Kevin Pilkington for taking the time to volunteer for this interview, and wish him all the best for this season and the rest of his career. You can follow Kevin on twitter at @kpilks.

Baggies to use Myhill as Bait!

West Bromwich Albion’s pursuit of Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster has taken another twist, as it now appears they are prepared to give them current stopper Boaz Myhill in return.
Foster looks set to move to the Hawthorns in a season long loan deal, with Birmingham eager to get him off their wage bill after suffering relegation to the championship.

The news will no doubt come as a blow to Myhill, who has already expressed his frustration at Roy Hodgson looking elsewhere to fill their current goalkeeping void. However it appears he could be moving the other way, should Roy Hodgson be successful in his acquisition of the former Manchester United stopper.

Lindegaard to Fight for Place!

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has sent out a warning message to Old Trafford new boy David De Gea, by stating his intent on becoming Manchester United’s number 1 this season.
The former Aalborg stopper spent much of last season on the sidelines due to Edwin Van Der Sar’s dominance between the sticks and also due to a knee operation that has sidelined him since March. However the Danish international has set his sights on breaking in to the Manchester United first team this term.
Lindegaard said “It’s not about making the choice difficult for Sir Alex. For me, it’s about being number one. That is what it’s all about – playing. I enjoy competing and, so far, I feel very good.
“There is big competition in all the spots but, so far, I’m very satisfied with my own performances.
“I think I’ve played very well so I believe in my chance. If I didn’t believe in my chance, how could I expect other people to?
“I’m not scared at all. I am very proud of representing Manchester United. It’s the biggest dream in my career come true.”
These words will sure be of no surprise to United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been quick to dismiss hotshot De Gea as guaranteed first choice at Old Trafford.

Baggies Fancy Foster!

West Brom have made contact with Birmingham City over possibly signing goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Roy Hodgson is in the market for a new stopper since offloading Scott Carson to Bursaspor, and has identified Foster as his top target. Talks have opened between the two clubs, and with Birmingham keen to reduce their wage budget since relegation - they are believed to be regretfully resigned to the former Manchester United man leaving the club, be it on a permanent deal or on loan.

Foster has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, but with Spurs opting for Brad Friedel and Aston Villa signing Shay Given, West Brom have now become the front runners in the chase to sign the highly rated goalkeeper.

It is believed that The Baggies will make a move for West Ham's Rob Green should a bid for Foster fail to materialize, however with both clubs looking to do business and Foster enjoying life in the Midlands - it appears Foster will be making the move to The Hawthorns in the not too distant future.

WBA manager Roy Hodson had this to say on the matter, "I am aware of our interest but I am not aware of how far down the line we are with our negotiations with Birmingham, so I can't make any comments on that.

"But Ben Foster is a goalkeeper who interests us and if we can get him to West Bromwich Albion on loan or on a permanent deal, that would be something we would be very happy about."
What is for certain is that Foster represents one of the best options for WBA, with him being a stand out performer in the Premiership last season he will no doubt be a great acquisition for The Baggies.

Neuer Feels The Law!

Bayern Munich's die hard supporters, known as the Bavarian Ultra's are less than pleased by the German club's acquisition of Germany international Manuel Neuer.

The clear opposition to Bayern's new custodian has stemmed from the fact that he is a life-long Schalke supporter, Bayern's most fierce rivals and Neuer's former club - with this being an allegiance that the Bavarian Ultra's are simply unable to forgive.

With Neuer making his début appearance in a easy pre-season victory. The Ultra's took it upon themselves to erect a banner, displaying their position on Bayern's latest signing. The banner read "You can save as many balls as you like, but we will never accept you in our shirt!"

Now German newspaper 'De Bild' claims to have been presented with a code of conduct that the Bavarian Ultra's expect Neuer to abide to during his time at the Allianz Arena. These set of rules were provided to Neuer in a clear-the-air meeting between the goalkeeper and group of hardcore Bayern supporters. The code of conduct is reported to be as follows:

  1. Neuer must never sing fan chants on the Bayern megaphone, a tradition reserved for popular players.
  2. Kneel in front of the team and sing "the Humba song."
  3. Approach the South Stand (where the Ultra's sit).
  4. Throw his shirt in to the crowd.
  5. Kiss the Bayern badge on his shirt.
Whilst the Bayern board have dismissed the action of these fans, it appears that the growing feeling around the German giants is that Neuer would be wise to stick to these rules if he wishes to have a happy time at his new club!

You wouldn't have got this grief at Old Trafford Manuel....!

Those Who Can - Coach!

The second of KeeperTalk's recent interviews focuses on an aspiring goalkeeper coach in Carl King. Carl is currently Blyth Spartans AFC head goalkeeper coach, and has big aspirations of making it the top of his field. Like many goalkeeper coaches,Carl had his career stopped at an early age due to injury - with coaching being the obvious alternative. Since then Carl has made great progress in his career as a goalkeeper coach and is now the owner of GoalieTEK Goalkeeper Coaching. Here is a bit of an clip of the conversation KeeperTalk had with Carl:

1.What made you get in to goalkeeper coaching?

I retired from playing through injury at 23 so coaching was the next best thing

2. Was it difficult to get in to goalkeeper coaching?

I was quite lucky that my sons under 7's team at the time needed a goalkeeper coach so i volunteered and was there 3 years coaching the academy goalkeeepers, women goalkeepers and 1st team goalkeepers!

3.Did you have a successful playing career?

Yeah i was fairly succesful at junior level. I played for Middlesbrough FC for 1 and a half years and also represented England NABC Under 16's.

4.Who is your all time goalkeeping inspiration?

It's got to be Peter Schmeichel. The word legend was invented for guys like this! My coaching inspirations are Simon Smith, Nigel Spinks and Fred Barber.

5.Who do you rate that is playing currently?

For me Pepe Reina is up in the top 3 keepers in the world. Guy has everything!

6.Who do you not rate?

Gomes at Spurs.

7.Where do you see your career going in the next 10 years?

Hopefully i will be a Uefa A licensed professional Goalkeeper coach in 10 years time.

8.What goalkeeping products would you advise?

I've been wearing KA Goalkeeping gloves for past 2 years but have made the switch over to Pro-Tek GK for this season so would recommend both of them

9. Any advice for young goalkeepers?

Listen to your goalkeeper coach, if you make a mistake react ina positive manner, never let your head drop and most crucially - enjoy it.

Shay Given Five Years!!

Aston Villa have completed the signing of former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given for £3.5 Million.
Signs 5-Year deal at Villa Park
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper has been in limbo for the past year, having lost his position at Manchester City to Joe Hart. A move to Aston Villa has proved too good to turn down and Given will no doubt be looking forward to playing week in week out again.
Perhaps the surprising part of the transfer is the length of the contract that Villa have tied Given down too. With Given having signed a five-year deal, a contract that will take the experienced stopper past his 40th birthday, it is certainly a contract that has raised a few eyebrows.
Aston Villa have had their fingers burnt this season, with Brad Friedel opting to let his contract run in order to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer – which many will see as the motivation behind the large contract for Given. It is also reported that Given has taken a £60k per week pay cut in order to join The Villians, a decision that proves the Irishman’s desire to put his time at Eastlands behind him.
Regardless of the paperwork, there is no doubting that the Villa Park faithful will be delighted to have signed such a high calibre of goalkeeper, with new manager Alex McLeish being a firm admirer of the Given’s abilities. “We believe we have secured the services of one of the best goalkeepers in the business.”

The Bosman Board...

This new feature for Keepertalk will focus on those individuals that unfortunately find themselves without a club this summer. For many, this will be a make or break summer for their career and need every help they can get in promoting themselves to perspective clubs!

Our first goalkeeper looking for a new club is Christoffer Eklund, a promising 21 year old Swedish goalkeeper who has just been told that his current club Kristianstad FF (Swedish First Division) will not be renewing his contract. Whilst Christoffer is not particularly sad to be leaving Kristianstad, he does find himself at a crossroads in his career. Highlights of Christoffer can be seen below:

This is Keepertalk's interview with Christoffer:

How did last season go for you?

My last season I spent at Loan to VMA IK. That was a great year for me that developed me alot. I also loved the team alot and the lads in the squad. This year I returned to Kristianstad . I wanted to continue in VMA IK but the coach in Kristianstad wouldn't let me. So this last 4-5 months haven't been so good and fun as I wanted it to be. I don't like it in Kristianstad and thats why I'm looking for a new club. You got to have joy in football otherwise you can't deliver your best.
What are you looking for from your next club?

I'm looking for a club were I can put full focus on my football and for a coach that believes in me.

Would you ever consider playing abroad?

I'm open for any option: Going abroad would be a good option because Sweden is a pretty small country.

Who is your favourite current goalkeeper?

Gianluigi Buffon

Who is the goalkeeper you most dislike?

I'm not a hater but since I'm a Man United fan I don't like Thomas Kuszack. I also think Kirkland is highly overrated.

Who is your all-time favourite goalkeeper?

Peter Schmeichel, he's the reason I started to play as a goalkeeper.

What gloves are you wearing at the moment?

I'm wearing Puma Powercat 1.10 but I prefer Adidas Response.

What is your ambition for your career?

My ambition is to play at a high pro-level for my whole career. To become as good as I can get. To give everything for what I can become.

I would like to thank Christoffer for taking the time to have an interview for Keepertalk and hope that this interview may help find him a new club, and all the best for the future! Keepertalk will be behind him the whole way!! Lets get #signchristoff trending!!!!!

Manager Sorted - Now Get on the Keeper!!

Aston Villa FC has been dominated recently by the managerial problems that Randy Lerner has prompted, before finally opting for Alec McLeish his choice.. Amongst this media frenzy, everybody seems to have forgotten about the other pressing concern at Villa Park – who is going to replace Brad Friedel?

Whilst everyone must have been sad to see the USA veteran leave the club, the hierarchy at Villa Park will surely have had contingency plans in place for Friedel’s replacement.  The problem that is in place evident is that whoever gets appointed as new manager will have a preference, yet surely the same candidates will be in the frame! Here we will discuss a few options that Villa may consider.
1.Brad Guzan – Brad Friedel’s understudy and national counterpart has been at Villa a couple of years now, and has been very highly rated. However lack of playing time and untimely errors in league cup football may well count against the USA stopper. Guzan will no doubt be looking to put pressure for a starting berth next season.

2. Ben Foster – Surely given all the controversy around Alex Mcleish’s potential switch across the second city, Villa would not risk upsetting the ‘BlueNoses’ any further? Should they decide to go for Foster, a large fee will no doubt be required, yet a still relatively young goalkeeper with undoubted ability could be deemed a sound investment! Foster has declared his happiness at Birmingham yet a move to Villa and to stay in the Premiership may prove too good to turn down.

3.  Rob Green – High earner at West Ham, solid Premiership goalkeeper, relatively low price – Greeno could be deemed as an ideal candidate for the midlands club. One thing that may count against the England international is his infamous howler against USA in the World Cup –an error that many fickle England/Aston Villa fans may have not forgiven.

4. Tomasz Kuszczak – The Poland international has almost certainly played his last game for champions Manchester United, and has declared his desire to remain in the Premiership. The former West Brom custodian would be available at a cut price, and could be seen as an answer to replacing Friedel – despite his inconsistent reputation.

5. Heurelho Gomes – Would Villa be willing to pay a significant fee for the erratic Brazilian’s services, and would they be prepared to do that for a goalkeeper that has become a national joke? There is no doubting that an on form Gomes is a great asset, it’s the other occasions that cause a concern!

6. Thomas Sorenson – The former Villa goalkeeper would probably be available at a reasonable price having fallen behind Asmir Begovic in the pecking order at the Britannia stadium. Sorenson would probably relish an opportunity to return to Villa Park through the perspective that being Stoke’s ‘cup goalkeeper’ is maybe a bit beneath him. Could prove a shrewd piece of business by Villa.

Whilst all of these goalkeepers are realistic options, there are of course many other options to Villa’s disposal. The lure of Shay Given may prove too tempting, whilst any of the Arsenal backups of Almunia or Fabianski may relish an opportunity to prove themselves, where as David Stockdale may recognise an opportunity of first team football in leaving Fulham. These are all options that will no doubt be considered.
What is for certain is that this will almost certainly be Aston Villa’s first issue to be addressed now that McLeish has been appointed.

Keeper Talk Comedy Sessions!

Diego Barreto of Paraguayan team Cerro Porteno will be keeping his head down this week following an absurd piece of goalkeeping.

Barreto defied all common sense when he somehow allowed his defender’s tame back header to evade his grasp an dribble shamefully in to his goal. Whilst we always try our best to support goalkeepers here at KeeperTalk we could not resist the urge to bring this to your attention.

Brazillian hotshot Neymar was somehow credited with the goal, however our research has found that he had to be stretchered soon after – with a severe case of split sides!!

Keeper Talk - Transfer Window Preview

As the Premiership season has drawn to an end, many Goalkeepers will be looking at what position they now find themselves in. Be it in the Premiership or Sunday league, every footballer in the country may end up moving on this summer. Goalkeepers are no different.

Of course the glamorous transfers will happen in the Premiership, and there are many clubs on the lookout, and again many top Goalkeepers who will be looking for transfers!!

Who is On The Lookout?

Manchester United - Following the great Edwin Van Der Sar's retirement. Fergie has got a hell of a job on his hands in replacing, in my opinion the worlds greatest and of course Keepertalk's Goalkeeper of the season. Fergie's plan A was clearly to groom Ben Foster for the number one spot, however that unfortunately has not gone to plan. Plan B (not the rapper) is to get in a top quality replacement. As previously posted, Kusczak is a joke, and Lindegaard is unproven.

Tottenham Hotspur - Following a fantastic season for Spurs, it has become blatantly obvious that there has been a weak link in their side, and this link is called Huerelho Gomes. High profile mistakes, in high profile games at high profile moments by the Brazilian have contributed to Spurs' downfall this season. When your own crowd jeers your goalkeeper, that is always a problem. Good old 'Ary seems to have lost faith in his number 1, and Cudicini is nowhere near up to scratch. A top Goalkeeper is undoubtedly top of Harry's shopping list.

Aston Villa - Whilst Villa have had many problems this year, Goalkeeping probably has not been one of them. However the ageing Brad Friedel has shown signs of his age catching up with him, and it may be time for Villa to invest in longevity. Gut feeling is that Villa will invest in an English goalkeeper, however the decision will be in the hands of the manager - and we can't be 100% sure on who that is yet.

Wigan Athletic - Following a highly successful loan spell for Ali Al-Habsi, the Oman national will undoubtedly be The Latics' first choice to sign on a permanent deal. Whilst I am not a fan of his, I cannot argue that he has had a good season and will probably be heading to the DW this summer. However you cannot rule out the possibility of Wigan being gazumped by a bigger club, we all know Dave Whelan doesn't give out the most illustrious of contracts.

Arsenal - Fabianski and Almunia both aren't good enough. Some say that Szczesny is, however I dont believe so (see previous posts). It could well be that Arsenal will again try and sign a goalkeeper having baulked at Fulham's £2m valuation of Mark Schwarzer.

Leicester City - Sven's Championship side are now the Man City of the Championship, with money being no object in the owner's ambition of being in the Premiership. It is clear that a goalkeeper is a big void that need filling for the Foxes, and I would not be surprised to see them make a big signing this summer.

Others that may be monitoring the market - WBA/Newcastle - Both won't have a stopper as a priority, however may look to have a dip in the market should the right opportunity become available. Maybe a cheeky loan (you will see my guess later).

Who is Available??

Ben Foster - Keepertalk favourite BF has had a fantastic season at Birmingham, and has been let own by his teams inability to score goals. Despite Ben not wanting to leave Birmingham, he and the club will have to seriously consider his future. He may end up staying, however there will be plenty of Premier League sharks swimming around the winner of Keepertalk's save of the season.

Rob Green - Greeno is a goalkeeper who adheres himself to fans, however it looks certain that he will also leave West Ham following their relegation. West Ham will need him off the wage bill and I am sure that RG will not turn down the opportunity of a fresh start.

Shay Given - After a year on the bench, has Shay got comfortable sitting on his wages? If the answer is no, then surely a move must be on the cards this summer? Top class keeper wherever he has been, many would snap him up if they can afford his wages.

Ali Al Habsi - Surely Wigan bound? Bolton will not allow him to gazump Jussi, so surely it makes sense to sell. Probably a case of highest bidder wins.

Gomes -  Spurs will undoubtedly be looking to sell, however common sense dictates that Mr Tickle would like a move abroad. Would be very suprised to see a domestic switch.

David de Gea - Looks set to sign for Man United, don't know much about him as La Liga bores me.

Maarten Stekelenberg - Linked with Man U, Spurs, Arsenal. Would be no surprise if  he makes a Prem move.

Thomas Sorenson - Will he be happy being the cup keeper this season? Sense suggests not. Solid reliable premiership keeper.

David Stockdale - Performed admirably in Mark Schwarzer's absence this year. Gut feeling tells me that a loan move would make sense.

Frazer Forster -  Had a great season on loan at Celtic. Will he be given an opportunity at Newcastle next year? Big decision for Alan Pardew.

Paul Robinson - Surely would have left Rovers should they have been relegated from the Prem, their survival will probably mean that he ends up staying. The Venkys are under no pressure to sell, and will be looking to heavily invest in the squad - not rip it apart.

Matt Gilks - Keepertalk's winner of fraudster of the season is out of contract at the end of the season. Man City have apparently shown an interest in signing him as a backup. Will be a great move for him because he is pretty rubbish.

Richard Kingson -  Cant see him having much more of a future at relegated Blackpool. The Carphone Warehouse is probably a realistic transfer for Kingo.

Tomasz Kuszczak - Looks set to leave OT following being non stop pathetic. I have no doubt that somebody will probably make the mistake of signing him.

Keepertalk Predictions!

Ben Foster to Spurs - I believe that 'Ary will be looking for a goalkeeper of big character to come in to the dressing room. This is why I believe that his first choice will be Paul Robinson. Many Spurs fans have a soft spot for Robbo and he probably thinks he has unfinished business at Spurs. Despite this I do not believe that Rovers will sell. Redknapp has said many times that he is a big fan of the Fozzman and will probably see him as the next best thing.

De Gea/Stekelenberg to Man United - It looks clear that United are going to sign one of these. Think Fergie fancied Reina but Kenny has taken over he looks set to stay. Both will have the unenviable task of replacing Edwin, one of the true greats.

Rob Green to Villa - Think Greeno could be a good signing for Villa should they decide a replacement is necessary. Similar size club to West Ham and similar sort of spolight. Villa won't need to break the bank for him. Think Birmingham may prevent Foster from joining Villa, Green is the next logical choice.

Arsenal to stick with Szczesny - Wenger is an idiot, and will put is faith in him. Arsenal will have another end of season capitulation. What a shame.

Sorenson/Kuzszcak to LeicesterLeicester will be looking for someone in this mould. Sorenson would be the better choice, that doesn't mean much though.

Ali Al-Habsi to Wigan - The deal has probably already been done.

Shay Given to Leave Man City - Not much of a prediction here, but I have no idea where he will go. Villa will be interested. But reckon he will go this year, his last chance really.

David Stockdale to WBA - Cheeky loan deal for WBA, good opportunity for Stockdale to prove his England credentials. Carson is pathetic but Hodgson can always fall back on him if Stockdale doesn't make the grade. This will probably mean that Boaz Myhill goes out on loan somewhere.

That concludes the Transfer Window Preview, no doubt all these predictions will be wrong - they usually are. Feel free to post your own speculation.

The Annual 'Keeper Talk' Awards.......brought to you by Sondico.

It gives me great pleasure to publish the first 'Keeper Talk' Awards. Every season, members of our union who give 100% in their role and this never seems to get reflected in the PFA awards. So this is where goalkeepers of the world can get together, share their views and we can celebrate the finest (and not so finest) of our sport. The awards for the 2010/2011 season can be seen below:

Young Player of the Year - Joe Hart

Fantastic season where he has helped Man City to a current Champions League spot, claimed the Man City number 1 jersey in doing so and also is now England's first choice goalkeeper. Big saves in big games have helped Joe establish himself as one of the worlds top goalkeepers, and I am sure this success will continue.

Newcomer of the Year - Simon Mignolet

Despite being signed as a backup goalkeeper, as expected with Craig Gordon's chocolate body, Mignolet has been forced in to first team action. Steve Bruce has often praised this guy's ability and despite a few questionable moments - Mignolet has had a great first season in the Prem. His performance against Arsenal alone is enough for me to rate him!

Fatality of the Year - Chris Kirkland

I have always been a huge fan of CK, and it pains me to see what has happened to him. Being in goal for an opening day 4-0 home loss to Blackpool is enough to destroy anyone's confidence, but CK's head has well and truly gone AWOL. Shipped out on loan deals to Leicester, and almost to Cardiff, it has become clear that Kirkland's career has well and truly gone kaputt! Where Chris can go from here I have no idea.

Comeback of the Year - Kevin Poole

Having retired in 2009. Burton Albion's Goalkeeper coach Kevin Poole decided to have another stab at the big time at the grand old age of 46, in order to help out the Burton chaps! Great effort by a legend of the game. A true legend of bench warming and he truly puts shame to Jens Lehmann's pathetic attempt at a comeback.

Fraud Of The Season - Matt Gilks

This guy is a fraudster, I'm hearing  whispers of potential transfers to Man City etc when his contract runs out at the end of this season. Believe me when I tell you, this will nooooo be a good thing! I may even put it out there that our good friend Richard Kingson is better than him.

Mistake of the Season - Greeno

It has to be really doesn't it. The occasion, the expectation, the promise........by no means the worst error this season. But it will never be forgotten unfortunately for Rob Green.

Performance of the Season - Fozzy vs Arsenal

I am a firm believer that great performances that occur in big games are the ones that matter. Its all very well having a blinder in a mid season league game as Fozzy has done all year, but these need to be reproduced on the biggest stage. Needless to say, The Fozzman delivered:

Mr Consistent of the Season - Mark Schwarzer

A good season from a top goalkeeper, no mistakes and an extremely professional season from one of the Prem's finest custodians. Should we be surprised?

Player of the Season - Edwin Van Der Sar

An idiot once said that Van Der Sar was finished, and that he should have hung up his gloves following a bottling against Chelsea in late 2009. I was that idiot.

VDS has been top of the tree this year, and will be retiring at the pinnacle of world goalkeeping. There are no superlative's left to describe this keeper. Arguably one of the biggest complements that KeeperTalk can give is that there will soon be the article 'Van Der Sar or Schmeichel?' - stay posted!

The Big One - Save of the Season

3rd place: Cech vs Stoke

(vid cannot be found for some reason)

2nd: Gordon vs Bolton

Winner: It's that man again!

This concludes the KeeperTalk awards for 2011. I look forward another great year of Goalkeeping - and look forward to next year!

The Keeper Talk Theme Tune

The undervalued art of Bench Warming...

Its around this time in the season that stories start being released of players becoming disgruntled with life on the sidelines, and rumours start surfacing of moves away from their current clubs. The other day I witnessed an article on Tomas Kuszczak informing the media of his decision that it is time to leave Old Trafford - what a massive shame that is! His reason for this declaration is due to the fact that he is tired of sitting on the bench at the worlds biggest club, something that many (including myself) would die for!

These people are the unsung heroes of goalkeeping, those that go under the radar and are quickly forgotten. It take a certain character and attitude to sit on the bench all season, and it is one that I have plenty of respect for! I want to make clear that I am not talking about the greatest goalkeepers to be a sub (Shay Given for example), I am talking about goalkeepers that are great at being a sub. The attributes for which are as follows:

  • Never pipe up about lack of playing time!
  • Contribute heavily in the changing rooms to the team 'banter'!
  • When shit hits the fan, and they are forced to play, they deputise with minimal fuss!
  • Finally, they always seem to get a new 'improved' contract!
  • Frequently seem to move in to a coaching capacity when the time comes!
The top five goalkeepers in this category will now be discussed:

5. Mike Pollitt - Mike has learnt from the best, when he first started at Wigan he was a part of a goalkeeping trio that consisted of himself, Gary Walsh and John Filan. Any of those other two could have easily made the top five in this blog. Most people reading this will be aware that Mike Pollitt was for a long time a very highly rated goalkeeper, and probably still is. However Chris Kirkland's arrival at the then JJB stadium pushed Mike down the Wigan pecking order and ultimately to the bench.
MP flirted with the idea of leaving, even a couple of short loan spells occurred. This is before he came to the clever conclusion that a life on the sidelines is for him.
Since this change, Mike has become a club legend for The Latics. Always being at the forefront of any TV opportunity (Soccer AM regular)! This what I look for in a bench man! .......and yes - he is currently doing his coaching badges!

4. Raimond Van der Gouw - The Manchester United fans reading this will have nothing but fond memories of this guy! A genuinely good goalkeeper, and always more than a capable replacement for goalkeeping icons Peter Schmeichel and Fabien Barthez! Many will remember VDG's performances in Dortmund and Monaco, endearing him to many of United's fans!
Do you ever remember Raimond giving it large about his lack of playing time? No you did not! This is because he knew his role on the bench - and was proud of it! Many will also know that VDG is now a highly respected goalkeeping coach!

3. Espen Baardsen - What a goalkeeper! This guy does not follow the trend of backup goalkeepers, but if anybody was born to sit on the bench. It was this guy! Signed from the San Francisco All Black's for Tottenham - he was Ian Walker's backup in both goalkeeping prowess and mainly style! Despite many heroic performances for Spurs! An opportunity at Watford came available, where he became backup to Alec Chamberlain, displaced Chamberlain, and then went back to the bench - his natural role! He then went to Everton - to sit on the bench!

The best thing about Espen Baardsen, he retired from professional football aged 25 having 'lost interest in the game' - basically he couldn't be bothered training anymore! Legendary!

2. Tony ' Bonus' Warner - Tony spent five ears sat on the bench at Liverpool, playing behind David James. Due to Warner's constant bench role he was nicknamed 'Bonus' by the Liverpool players due to him always collecting the teams win bonus, despite never contributing. to the performance. The best and worse of Bonus can be seen below:

1. Carlo Nash - Quote on Wikipedia "Throughout his career Nash has been used as a second and third choice keeper ".  Think that says it all!
After starting off as a non league dog, and then becoming a expert in the of bench warming at Man City,  Carlo seemed to have found his club when he signed for Stoke, and played a major part in helping The Potters gain promotion to the Premiership. A dilemma followed, Carlo had an offer from Everton - better money to sit on the bench at his boyhood club? Deal!
With Carlo's contract expiring, big Tone Pulis wanted the big man back, who else can be a steady backup to Thomas Sorenson, only Carlo could do this job. What were Carlo's demands? Simple - more money! This transfer prompted a beautiful eulogy from the great Tony Pulis:

"Carlo was happy to come here as our third choice 'keeper, but people should not under-estimate the contribution he has made, and the peace of mind which he gives us," Pulis told the club's official website.
"It is important to have three top goalkeepers in the Premier League and to have someone with his experience as additional cover, so we are delighted that he has agreed to remain here.
"He has a tremendous attitude and great enthusiasm for the game, so I know that if we need to call upon him again at any point in the future, he can be relied upon to do a good job for us."
Carlo then gave this great explanation, which encapsulates everything he does (and should) believe in!
"It's a difficult decision - whether to go for something like this or for a No.1 spot somewhere else. But when there's a deal on the table, you've got to do what's best for the family."

Main Advantage of Being a Goalkeeper - create your own look!!

After the passing of London fashion week, it got me reminiscing about a history of strong goalkeeping looks that have graced my eyes. After further research I was delighted to stumble across the new France Jersey, that Hugo Lloris will no doubt be pulling all the high class Paris birds with! Check out this number...

It must be said that the French have had a history of elegance when it came to their attire. Fabien Barthez was the first man to bring the French preference for shades over colours, breaking the Manchester United trend of greens and purples that Peter Schmeichel had represented for so many years.

David Seaman had a big say in his Euro 96 goalkeeping kits. Love them or hate them you have to admire Mr Safe Hand's boldness and confidence to come up with these exceptional looks:

David James has always been one to try and grab the attention, and many would argue that it earned him the England no.1 jersey.

But what is the point in this post? The point is to establish who has the strongest look in the Prem. There is no doubting that the influence that an individual will have on his shirt design has decreased over recent  years due to Prem teams opting to have a 'squad of three', rather than a out and out number 1. Competition for the shirt is fierce therefore it would be foolish to allow such an influence. The only keepers I could suggest may have this right would be Reina, Cech, Foster, Jaskelianen?? That is open to debate.
The strongest looks in the prem I consider to be the following:

Runner Up: Joe Hart - Man city have opted for the classic green, with a second choice of classic black. No frills here, very simple and very effective. I am not convinced that Joe has any influence in the design, and instead opt for the fact that Umbro have just massively stepped their game up as the new England attire is also very decent! (Maybe Umbro have decided to concentrate a little bit less on their Sports Direct polo shirts - shirts that I associate with "commoners").

Winner: Pepe Reina - Pepe had this misfortune of joining Liverpool during the middle of a two year kit cycle, meaning that unfortunately for him he had to deal with Chris Kirland/Jerzy Dudek's mustard hand-me-down's! Since this cycle ended, and Liverpool's transition to an Adidas look - Pepe has flourished! Almost every single one of Pepe's kits has been outstanding, whether it be royal blue, a simple black/red or even a classic green - it has been incredibly impressive!

That is all I have really, I will leave you on my personal favourite kit, a kit that epitomises my very own catchphrase of "strong look"! Enjoy....

Just had to bring this up..... The Foster Final!

That is all....

King of the Ping??

After witnessing Edwin Van Der Sar's wonderfully caressed strike to assist Wayne Rooney last night, it got me thinking - just who is the King of the Ping?? In my opinion a goalkeepers distribution  and kicking is what can make a good goalkeeper a great goalkeeper - and this should be judged on three attributes: Length, Accuracy, and Sexiness (all out of a football manager style 20) !! Technique out the hands, and off the floor will be considered.

In order to find out the King of the Ping, and acknowledge an individual with this prestigious award, I will present the nominations below:

1. Edwin Van Der Sar - Surely a huge contender. Right foot or left foot, the ball is getting pinged, and most of the time it is going to the requested target. Off the floor is where Edwin flourishes, as Rooney's goal last night proved. Out the hands I admit to being a bit unsure on Edders, as it is quite rare to witness such an event wih him usually choosing to roll it out to his feet or giving the easy throw. Ratings are: Length 17, Accuracy 15, Sexiness 12.

2. Pepe Reina - When you ask most people about a goalkeeping ping and distribution, their automatic answer is usually Pepe Reina -and rightly so. Reina's ability out his hands and off the deck are a joy to behold, and would be very difficult to find a flaw. For this reason I am going to keep Pepe's eulogy short and sweet. Ratings are: Length 17, Accuracy 16, Sexiness 17.

As stupid as this is I cannot find any evidence.

3. Joe Hart - Joe Hart is by the most confident and eager to impress goalkeeper I have seen in a long time.Always happy to zing the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, and ever so sexy in doing so. Out the hands, the way he tosses the ball up with a spin is just defines beauty, topped with the way he cuts across the ball giving it a flat trajectory. Unfortunately for Joe, for every seven that hit the spot there are three that miss out (this could be due to the fact that he is aiming for midget Carlos Tevez 90% of the time). But that does count against him. Ratings are: Length 14, Accuracy 15, Sexiness 20.
(cant find any videos of his technique out of hands, but this clip below should give evidence of Joe Harts confidence and his striking ability)

4. Paul Robinson - Whilst splitting opinion throughout his career, I have always remained a Robbo fan, even throughout that period where his head was missing! Regardless of what your perspective on him as an all-rounder, you cannot hide from the fact that his right foot is an absolute weapon! Robbo's distance is incredible, and is extremely accurate - with me once hearing that he can drop it in a 5 yard circle (and you wonder why Sam was such a big fan??). Only slight and petty criticism would be that the trajectory is ore of a looper than flat - marking his sexiness down. In my opinion, Paul Robinson is the original King of the Ping.
Ratings: Distance 20, Accuracy 19, Sexiness 10.

(You have no idea how much this clip pains me - but Ben became stronger from this......it happens mate!)

5. Ben Foster - let the bias begin. Big Ben has got one of the sweetest, sweetest strikes you will see. I personally compare his striking ability to that of a Tiger Woods drive, with the trajectory and outcome being similar. I'm talking about off the deck here, as I will admit that Fozzy's technique out his hands could sill be worked on - which does bring his accuracy down. Ratings: Distance 14, Accuracy 13, Sexiness 20.
(the clip below on 2minutes 40seconds shows you about Ben's Tiger Woods strike)

6. Huerelho Gomes - Eueeeeww  - Ratings 1:1:1

I'm sure there are more to this list, if you are wondering about Khune the South African keeper - he is banned a he fall in to the category of African Clown, and is banned from these discussions (see previous posts).

In order to name a winner in this hotly contested battle, I will be opening the debate up to a poll - the winner will be announced at around the same time as the Brits Lifetime Achievement Award. Please feel free to comment.

African Goalkeepers - Distance over Direction!!!

OK, you may want to hold your breath here, as I am writing about the subject that many would rather not talk about. You will not catch any SKY pundit coming out with these comments, not because they are ludicrous - but because they are true! You know it, I know it, we all know it - AFRICAN GOALKEEPERS ARE TERRIBLE!!!

The aim of this post is not to ridicule or take snipes at these goalkeepers, but instead maybe to educate, theorise and understand why this is the case. This theory may be used at Universities throughout the world in years to come - I wouldn't bet on it though!!

My theory is simple, African goalkeepers have been matured with an ideology of Distance over Direction. This case study will elaborate on examples of this theory being put into practice...

Case 1: Diving and making saves - We all know that making saves are effectively what a Goalkeeper's main job is (Scott Carson may disagree). But what has always confused me is to why African goalkeepers will purposely get their positioning wrong, just to make sure they have to dive the maximum length possible to make the save! Look at this clip of the comedic Richard Kingson in training, and ask yourself "does he need to jump this high/far?" Just save it mate!! (i'm not even going to get started in the other business that Richard gets up to.)

Case 2: Goal Kicks - when it comes to kicking, it is an area that is becoming more and more essential for top goalkeepers. Keeper such as Reina, Van Der Sar, Robinson, Foster and Hart are valuable assets to their team due to their ability to zip the ball to a player of their choice effortlessly. The African goalkeepers have not quite mastered this skill, with them being unable to pick out a player or area - but are able to smash the ball ridiculously far!! The classic example of this is South Africa's Itumeleng Khune, who's length of drop kick defies belief! I have searched long and hard for this, but YouTube does not have any evidence - which is very disappointing! Just take my word for it.

Case 3 - Form - Once the game has kicked off, an African goalkeeper is either going one way or the other - and will never just take the safe middle road. This means they are either going to have an absolute worldy, or an absolute nightmare!! Everyone knows that the best goalkeepers are those that make very few errors - the Africans do not know this. For example, I bring you Vincent Enyeama. The 2010 World Cup stared with a bang for Nigeria's number one, with him producing goalkeeping heroics to keep Argentina to just the one goal. Big clubs were linked with Enyeama, to which I was very amused. This game was forgotten soon after however when a Vincent Enyeama catastrophe eliminated the Nigeria Super Eagles from the World Cup - we all knew it was coming. Evidence below.

Case 4: Banter - We all know that all footballers like a laugh, and who wouldn't! But its very rare that you see an African goalkeeper coming out as one of the key figures in the changing room, the joker of the pack if you may. Charles Itandje (and he is Cameroonian - not French) tried to change this, and get involved in some harmless banter. Good on you Charles! Unfortunately Charles went the whole distance, yet wrong direction by choosing to do it at the Hillsbrough Disaster anniversary - prompting his swift exit from the club. Evidence below: Silly Silly Boy Charles.

I have to go to work now, so am unable to expand on this article as much as I would like to. I appreciate this is a controversial subject.....fire your criticisms at will!!
